The words "large-scale winery" often bring certain assumptions.
Uniformity. Industrial production. A compromise between quantity and character.
Virgen de las Viñas Bodega y Almazara has spent decades challenging those assumptions.
Located in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha, the cooperative operates within the largest continuous vineyard area in the world. It is also recognised as the largest winery in Europe, processing around 300 million kilograms of grapes annually across an extensive range of varieties. Yet despite its remarkable scale, the winery has consistently focused on producing wines that combine regional authenticity with the quality and value demanded by today's international markets.

Among the cooperative's most recognised brands is Tomillar, a collection that reflects both the diversity of La Mancha and the accessibility that has made Spanish wine one of the world's strongest value propositions.
Rather than concentrating on a single variety, Tomillar explores the breadth of the region through Tempranillo, Syrah, Chardonnay, and other classic grapes, offering wines designed to perform equally well in restaurants, retail, and by-the-glass programmes. The range reflects the winery's broader philosophy: wines that remain approachable while expressing the character of their origin.
Castilla-La Mancha has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. Once known primarily for high-volume production, the region has increasingly demonstrated its ability to produce wines of quality and precision. Modern vineyard management, improved cellar technology, and a stronger emphasis on varietal expression have helped redefine international perceptions of Spain's largest wine-producing region.
Its facilities cover more than 200,000 square metres, combining modern winemaking technology with traditional methods. As a cooperative, it brings together the work of numerous growers, allowing generations of viticultural knowledge to support production on a scale few wineries anywhere in the world can match.

The youthful Tempranillo offers fresh fruit and vibrant structure, while Crianza and Reserva expressions introduce additional complexity through maturation. Syrah provides a softer, fruit-driven interpretation of the variety, while Chardonnay demonstrates the adaptability of La Mancha's vineyards beyond red wine production.
At the 2026 Sommeliers Choice Awards, Tomillar enjoyed one of its strongest performances to date. Tomillar received a Gold Medal and 92 points, while Tomillar Crianza 2021, Tomillar Reserva 2017, and Tomillar Syrah 2025 each earned Gold Medals with 91 points. The judges highlighted the range for its balance, varietal expression, and food-friendly character, reinforcing the winery's ability to produce wines suited to the modern hospitality sector.

At the 2025 Sommeliers Choice Awards, Tomillar Crianza 2021 achieved a Gold Medal and 92 points, praised for its harmonious combination of raspberry fruit, savoury complexity, soft tannins, and integrated oak. Tomillar Tempranillo 2024 added a Silver Medal, while Tomillar Chardonnay 2024 received a Bronze Medal, demonstrating the breadth of quality across the portfolio.
They illustrate a winery capable of delivering consistency across multiple grape varieties and wine styles, an achievement that becomes increasingly significant at the scale on which Virgen de las Viñas operates. Producing wines for international markets requires not only quality but also reliability, a characteristic that importers, retailers, and hospitality buyers value as highly as critical acclaim.
The wines combine varietal typicity with broad food compatibility while remaining competitively positioned within premium-by-the-glass programmes. This combination of quality, value, and consistency aligns closely with the judging philosophy of the Sommeliers Choice Awards, where wines are evaluated specifically for their performance in restaurants and hospitality environments.
For many years, discussions around La Mancha centred almost exclusively on production volume. Today, the conversation increasingly includes quality, regional identity, and international competitiveness. Tomillar demonstrates that these ideas need not be mutually exclusive. Scale can coexist with precision. Accessibility can coexist with authenticity.
Virgen de las Viñas has built its reputation by proving exactly that.
Its cooperative model brings together hundreds of growers working across one of the world's most significant wine regions, while modern investment ensures that fruit is transformed into wines capable of competing on the international stage. The repeated success of the Tomillar range suggests that this combination of tradition, technology, and collective expertise continues to resonate with both judges and consumers.

The future of wine will undoubtedly include boutique estates producing tiny quantities from singular vineyards.
But it will also depend on producers capable of introducing millions of consumers to quality wine at accessible prices.
It demonstrates that excellence is not measured solely by how little a winery produces, but by how consistently it can express its region across every bottle that leaves the cellar. In doing so, it continues to show why La Mancha remains one of the most important and evolving wine regions in the world.
